What are Serum Tears?
How are Serum Tears made?
In short: To make serum tears, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient. The blood is then processed to remove red blood cells and other unwanted components. The resulting serum is diluted with sterile saline and bottled as eye drops in office at Seitz Eye Care.
At Seitz Eye Care, we have you get your blood drawn at Vernal Urgent Care. Once you get your blood drawn, and Vernal Urgent Care prepares it for us, we will pick it up and make the tears in our office sterile area. Once we make them by combining your serum and the doctor prescribed amount of saline, we’ll let you know they are ready. Keep in mind you want to have one bottle refrigerated and the rest put in your freezer to help the drops be preserved best.
What are the benefits of Serum Tears?
In short, there’s tons of benefits of going this route for your eye drops. Serum Tears can be an effective treatment for severe dry eye syndrome, especially when other treatments such as artificial tears or punctal plugs are not effective. Serum Tears are a much more natural drop compared to the manufactured artificial tears and other manufactured drops. The manufactured drops don’t have the organic properties that Seitz Eye Care’s Serum Tears have. At Seitz Eye Care, the average cost of 6 months or more of Serum Tears, including the blood draw at Vernal Urgent Care, is about $325.00 (and price can change) out of pocket.
Insurance does not cover Serum Tears. However, at Seitz Eye Care, our Serum Tears will likely last you at least 6 months.
If you consider how much you would spend, even with insurance, at a pharmacy picking up artificial tears or other expensive manufactured eye drops, you will be saving yourself 100’s of dollars. Some of the best manufactured eye drops do not even do as well as the Serum Tears that we can make for you.
